Whiskey Sour with a Mourne Dew Twist

Whiskey Sour with a Mourne Dew Twist

The Whiskey Sour is one of the great classic cocktails — balanced, elegant, and endlessly satisfying. Made with Mourne Dew Irish Whiskey, it takes on a warmth and depth that makes it perfect for any occasion, from a cosy autumn evening to a celebratory toast. Here's our take on this timeless recipe.

The Mourne Dew Whiskey Sour

Ingredients (serves 1):

  • 50ml Mourne Dew Irish Whiskey
  • 25ml fresh lemon juice
  • 15ml sugar syrup (or to taste)
  • 1 egg white (optional, but recommended for a silky texture)
  • Ice
  • Garnish: Angostura bitters, lemon slice, and a maraschino cherry

Method:

  1. If using egg white, add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker without ice and shake vigorously for 15 seconds (this is called a "dry shake" and creates a beautiful foam).
  2. Add ice to the shaker and shake again for another 15 seconds until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube, or into a coupe glass for a more elegant presentation.
  4. Add a few drops of Angostura bitters on top of the foam and use a cocktail stick to create a pattern. Garnish with a lemon slice and cherry.

Why Irish Whiskey Works So Well

Irish whiskey is typically triple-distilled, giving it a smoothness that makes it ideal for cocktails. Unlike some Scotch whiskies, it doesn't overpower the other ingredients — instead, it adds warmth, vanilla notes, and a gentle sweetness that plays beautifully against the tartness of the lemon. Our Mourne Dew Irish Whiskey brings its own character to the mix, with a depth that elevates this classic recipe.

Variations to Try

Once you've mastered the classic, try these variations:

  • Honey Sour: Replace the sugar syrup with honey syrup for a richer, more floral sweetness.
  • Smoked Sour: Add a few drops of smoky Scotch whisky on top for a dramatic finish.
  • Spiced Sour: Add a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of cardamom bitters for an autumnal twist.

The Perfect Occasion

The Whiskey Sour is one of those cocktails that works year-round. It's sophisticated enough for a dinner party, relaxed enough for a Friday evening at home, and impressive enough to serve to guests who think they don't like whiskey. It's a genuine crowd-pleaser — and with Mourne Dew at its heart, it's something to be proud of.

Sláinte!
